Sailing and Sponsoring the Leukemia Cup

RED SKY BLUE WATER was proud to once again be a part of the Leukemia Cup's marketing efforts for the event's 2011 regatta. Rex Houchins is a member of the Leukemia Cup's marketing committee and is determined to make this year's event the most successful yet. Rex brings a breadth of sailing and marketing experience to the committee, and RED SKY BLUE WATER designed and develed the event's marketing materials, including posters, flyers, web banners, and advertisements. It's no holds barred for such a great cause – the Leukemia Cup is hosted by the Washington/Alaska chapter of the Leukemia& Lymphoma Society, and proceeds help local leukemia and lymphoma patients. Holiday Carousel

As part of our pledge to contribute to our community, RSBW volunteered on December 9th at the Wonderland Holiday Carousel in Westlake Park to support Treehouse, an organization that is committed to improving the lives of children in foster care. Treehouse offers six core programs that provide children resources in education, college and career counseling, after-school activities, as well as clothing and essential supplies. Children involved with Treehouse are given the chance for a childhood as well as a bright future.

The RSBW team managed an entire evening of the event and was able to help support this wonderful organization by filling a number of roles. Some operated the ticket booth of the holiday carousel which included handing out tickets and encouraging donations. Team members also helped as carousel attendants by assisting riders and helping families take photographs. RSBW also really got into the spirit of things and served as the carousel operator and announcer welcoming and thanking all patrons and ensuring they enjoyed their ride. Donation bags were also distributed at the exit to inspire riders to participate in the clothing and toy drive to benefit the foster children.

The team even took their own carousel ride at the end of their shift to celebrate a fun-filled afternoon!

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Leukemia Cup Regatta℠

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Leukemia Cup Regatta℠ is a thrilling series of sailing events that combines the joy of boating with the important task of raising money to cure cancer. Since its inception, The Leukemia Cup Regatta has raised millions of dollars for lifesaving research and patient services, bringing help and hope to patients and their families.

"In yacht clubs across the country, skippers register their boats and recruit friends and colleagues to help crew and to raise funds. Crew members seek donations from friends, family, co-workers and employers to sponsor their boat. National and local event sponsors also support Regatta." | – Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

At Red Sky Blue Water we raised over $2000 and donated $6500 of our time and efforts to help support this wonderful organization. Our entire company volunteered their time on Saturday June 12th to turn up to two events on Lake Union – the first annual Aquaquest and one on the Puget Sound – the sailing regatta, Leukemia Cup where where we placed 3rd! We reserved a table at the silent auction and had a wonderful time mixing with our fellow boaters and bidding on all sorts of wonderful donations. We would like to thank the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for taking the time to bring hope and help to many people that are touched by leukemia or lymphoma.

This is the third year that Red Sky Blue Water has been able to support this event and we hope to have many more to come.

Beams & Dreams

Red Sky Blue Water participated in the seventh annual Beams and Dreams this past weekend on Saturday, August 8, 2009. It is the third year of participation for Red Sky Blue Water, and the event just keeps getting bigger and better!

Based out of Elliot Bay Marina, the organization recruits local captains to volunteer their sailboats and take out families affected by cancer out on Puget Sound for an afternoon of restorative sailing.

This year, over 100 individuals affected by cancer attended the event. The majority of the audience was children, which made it all the more touching to know that each of these lives is affected by the ravages of cancer. From the young girl with cystic fibrosis to a widowed family who lost their father to cancer, each person in the crowd had a story to tell. Yet they were all bonded by the battles they'd fought, against the disease that takes on all shapes and sizes and doesn't discern between young and old.

Families had an opportunity to share a meal and share their stories with each other. The Louisiana-style pulled pork and hot dogs were served with flair thanks to Murph's BBQ, alongside an enormous cooler stocked full of Capri Sun. Tables were decorated with colorful balloons and flowers, and George the Magician was on hand making an assortment of balloon animals for the young participants.

The event took on a lighter air when George gathered everyone around and took center stage. He amused the crowd with his magic tricks, and astounded children and adults alike with his tricks of illusion. His calls for volunteers were eagerly met with raised hands and willing participants. The peel of laughter could be heard throughout the marina during George's show.

And then it was time for boat assignments—what we'd all been waiting for! Families were assigned to various captains, and the crowd split up onto various boats. Captains were instructed to take participants on a 1-2 hour tour, and by the looks of the smiling faces upon return, everyone had a marvelous time.

Red Sky Blue Water makes a splash in Fremont

Red Sky Blue Water joined with a number of local businesses in raising over $83,000 for Children's Hospital, all in tribute to iconic Seattle children's character JP Patches. The commemorative statue of JP Patches and Gertrude stands at the heart of Seattle's Fremont neighborhood, just east of the Fremont Bridge. Surrounding the statue are plaques, including one from Red Sky Blue Water which states, "Get out of the office. Rock the boat. Do some good."
