Sharon A. Davison Ph.D. was interviewed by AlishaTV while accepting an award for Enterprising Women of the Year 2012. She was asked what her
passion was and what advice she would give to small businesses getting started. Red Sky Blue Water is a marketing and communications firm that
specializes in creative design, usability, marketing strategy and software development. Clients range from very large enterprise customers to
small businesses just getting started. Sharon said that she loves working with small businesses. Even though they are just getting started
and may have smaller budgets, the possibilities are just opening up for what they can accomplish.
Sharon said there are three key pieces of advice she would give to anyone starting their own business.
- Don’t be afraid.
You won’t know the answers to all of your questions, but you can always reach out to people who do. Find mentors in different areas and ask a lot of questions. Keep asking questions and keep learning and growing.
- Create a road map and be prepared to change it.
Stay flexible. It’s good to plan your path, but the one thing you can count on is that something will inevitably change. So you need to be prepared to make updates to that roadmap and keep moving forward.
- Act like a duck.
Make sure everything looks smooth on the surface no matter how hard your feet are paddling underwater. Confidence is half the battle, so act big even if you are a small business, but once you get big, act small: people like the personal touch.
